Prevent and British Values

The Department for Education have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all providers of education to promote fundamental British values.”

The Government clarified its definition of British values in the Prevent Strategy in 2011, these values have been reiterated with a statutory Prevent Duty incumbent upon Providers of education from the 1st of July 2015.

British values have been defined within the Prevent Duty as including:

  • Ensure all curriculum materials include information on democracy and how the law works.
  • Demonstrate how democracy works to all of our learners and to provide them with an understanding of how to get their opinions heard through our Learner Voice programs.
  • Use things like the general elections, political debates etc. to promote British values and support learners on techniques of how to debate and defend varying points of view.
  • Gain feedback on policies that affect learners under our care by consulting with learner representatives.
  • Encourage learners to take an active role in their learning and development and to take responsibility for their education.
Provide career development training and opportunities to staff.
